Not many got into the 1.25 at Epsom and I believe some in behind are worth another chance; London Bridge, Lasso The Moon who lost ground at the start, and Sam Sharp who was travelling ok before failing to come down the hill.
Like the Oaks I couldn't find a bet in the Derby. Sea The Stars was impressive not only in victory but in the way he handled proceedings. I doubted his ability to stay the trip in this grade, but due the strange tactics of the Coolmore pacemakers, he was able to travel sweetly and more than see out the distance. He was a most comfortable winner. Two in behind ran better than their finishing positions suggest. Rip Van Winkle (4th) finished the race better than any (bar the winner) and in my opinion was the 2nd best horse in the race, and despite finishing 6th Crowded House travelled sweetly in rear and there was definite evidence of his lightning turn of foot. His challenge petered out though and there is a case for dropping him back in trip - I'm confident there is a big race in him.
Coin Of The Realm showed a liking for Epsom when carrying my money over c&d back in April. Despite an unclear passage he finished 4th that day so it was no surprise to see him step up on that with an impressive win in the 4.30. He travelled smoothly behind the leading due and won with a bit in hand. He was a recent runner-up over hurdles and its looks as though Gary Moore has another bargain on his hands. The versatile gelding changed hands for just 22,000gns in the Autumn. Red Kestral ran better than his finishing position suggests, he travelled well for a long way before being eased once beaten.
At Doncaster, Without Prejudice found the soft going against him in the 2.05.
The same can be said about Uniquely Poised in the 2.35, he looks sure to find races on better ground. Arrivederla ran ok without threatening, she didn't quite see out this longer trip.
I'm still not sure how either King Fingal or Caerlaverock failed to win the 3.35. The pair traded at 1/3 and 2/5 in-running before getting collared by Cape Colony. Both will gain compensation very soon.
In the 5.45 at Musselburgh, Dolly Penrose made up plenty of ground inside the last to eventually go down by a short head. She looks well handicapped at present and looks sure to find a race soon, she will be especially hard to beat off this mark on easy ground in this grade.
Brett Vale ran away with the 6.25 at Lingfield. He could be a typical Prescott sequence horse. L'Arco Balerno is slowly coming to hand and could figure in a small race soon. Calling Victory looks to be regressing.
Ebiayn was backed as if defeat was out the question but could only finish 3rd - the horse is clearly better thought of. Although it made little difference to the result, Richard Hills must be the only man in the country who doesn't realise that the inside is slower at Lingfield. In fact there are remote Amazonian tribes that know you cannot challenge up the far rail inside the last at Leafy. Yet our Richard tries it race in, race out.
Danzoe flopped in the 6.40 2yo maiden at Newcastle.
Grey Command put in a solid performance to finish 2nd in the 8.10. He has slipped to a fair mark and may find a race over the summer.
Miss Keck was impressive in the 8.40. Everything was in her favour and to be fair it was a victory that had looked on the cards. She has been raised 8lb for this (now 66), I still think she can be competitive.
